Industry experts predict the continued growth of the yacht charter market in 2016. Retail charter brokers identify new and exciting destinations and opportunities for their clients. With the help of yacht maven Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters, we take a look at 2 more. Unique 2016 yachting vacations are spring’s most epic getaways.
HELI-SKIING YACHT CHARTER GREENLAND
At first glance, the idea of snow skiing and yachting seem mutually exclusive. Typically, if you want to go boating in the winter or spring, you jet off for the warm waters of the Caribbean. Conversely, a ski vacation normally occurs far away from any yachting destinations, in a mountainous area like Vail or Kitzbühel
All the more reason a combination ski trip and yachting holiday is about as unique as it gets, as one of the world’s largest yachts for hire will be offering heli-skiing charters along the coast of the world’s largest island!
The 254 foot ice-breaking Icon motor yacht LEGEND is offering adventure charters in Greenland, from April through June, 2016. She features guest accommodations for 26 passengers – perfect for private groups and large families.
GLACIERS AND ICEBERGS
Glaciers and icebergs make Greenland a unique destination. The alpine ranges south of the Arctic Circle in western Greenland are known for coastal heli-skiing on peaks up to 6500 feet (2,000 meters) and skiers can glide almost to the edge where the glaciers meet the sea.
As Jana Sheeder explains, the adventure goes far beyond the slopes.
“Motor yacht LEGEND has been specifically outfitted with a wide array of watersports equipment and toys for exploration. The yacht carries a small submarine for exploring under the ice pack, as well as kayaks, and snowmobiles. If you’re into adventure and exploration, this yacht has tremendous appeal.”
Onboard amenities include a cinema room, Balinese-style spa, gymnasium, and on-deck Jacuzzi large enough for 16 people.
Rates begin at €75900 per day with a 5 day minimum reservation required.
SOLAR ECLIPSE YACHT CHARTER SOUTHEAST ASIA
If skiing and polar exploration is not your thing, an exotic warm-weather escape might be more appealing, especially when you throw in one of the world’s greatest natural spectacles.
The world’s largest wooden sailing yacht is offering a rare opportunity to witness a celestial event in an environmentally vibrant, and culturally rich corner of our world.
Sail yacht LAMIMA is offering a 10-day adventure cruising the waters of Raja Ampat, Indonesia where on March 9, 2016 at 8:58am all onboard will witness a full solar eclipse.
COMPANY PRESIDENT COMMENTS
“Scientists have said one of the optimal viewing points on the earth to see the full effect of the eclipse is in the area of Raja Ampat,” says Sheeder. “We often encourage our clients to plan their private yacht charter vacations around the full moon, but experiencing a solar eclipse from an ocean vantage point is truly unique.”
ALL ABOUT INDONESIA
Indonesia offers diverse wildlife and world’s best snorkeling and diving sites. Sailing yacht LAMIMA has an extensive watersports inventory including kayaks, paddleboard, and a full inventory of SCUBA gear for both Padi and Nitrox certified divers. The crew includes a spa therapist and a local tour guide.
The ALL-INCLUSIVE 10-night charter rate for the solar eclipse excursion is $200,000 for up to 14 guests. Can’t make it for the big celestial event? The yacht’s regular weekly rate is $140,000. It can be pro-rated for trips as short as 5 days.
Sheeder hopes to organize more unique yachting excursions throughout 2016.
“We deliver The Superyacht Experience™ to our clients. We understand our clients want to immerse themselves and participate in unique cultural events. Skiing in Greenland and witnessing a solar eclipse in Indonesia are perfect opportunities to experience an epic eco-friendly adventure. What a great way to reconnect with family and friends, embrace diverse cultures, and rejuvenate mind, body, and spirit!”

The 82.50 meter motor yacht O’MEGA, one of the very few private luxury yacht charter vessels in the world with the capacity for over 12 guests, is heading to the Caribbean for the very first time this winter.
Re-launched in 2004 after a complete remodel from a near-bare hull, super yacht O’MEGA underwent a major refit in 2009, and has had continuous upgrades every year since. With an excellent crew-to-guest ratio, there are 30 crewmembers onboard to attend to 28 guests in 14 guest staterooms.
While in the Caribbean from early December, 2016 through April 2017, her weekly charter rate is €525,000 + running expenses. There is a two week minimum fee for charters during Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
The only other +12 passenger superyacht considering relocation to the Caribbean for the winter is the 36 passenger motor yacht CHRISTINA O, as her owner has expressed interest in the emerging Cuba yacht charter marketplace (now that travel restrictions between the governments of the United States and Cuba have been eased).
With so few large-capacity yachts in the Caribbean this winter, we expect strong demand for both of these vessels in the area of St. Martin, particularly for St Barts yacht charter clients who invade the small island to celebrate the New Year.
The 28 meter sailing yacht WHIRLWIND has joined the growing list of sailboats heading to the Caribbean for the winter and spring seasons, and is offering reduced rates to entice vacationers.
CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR CHARTERS
Currently accepting reservations for Christmas and New Years, sailing yacht WHIRLWIND is the ultimate Virgin Islands yacht charter sailboat for family of 6 to 8, with generous accommodations available in 3 guest staterooms.
ACCOMMODATIONS
The sailing yacht offers three double cabins. Two cabins have a Pullman berth. Thus, the yacht can accommodate 6 adults + max 2 kids. One double cabin is located forward port side. Two identical cabins exist aft at either side of upper saloon stairway. Each cabin has its own en-suite bathroom and shower.
ONBOARD AMENITIES
There are many onboard amenities. For instance, a Crestron–controlled multi-media entertainment system and a PlayStation game station for the kids. In addition, iPod docking stations throughout the yacht.
THE YACHT LAUNCH
Launched in 1988 by the fabled Holland Jachtbouw shipyard, the yacht features the classic styling of interior designer Andrew Winch who oversaw a major interior refit this year (2011).
AVAILABILITY
The yacht is available for the year-end holidays at a rate of € 32,760 per week. At the conclusion of the holidays, there are changes. Special winter and spring rates will then take effect. The price drops to €19,950 per week (regular winter/spring rate is € 26,600 per week). All rates are plus expenses.
Recently, we blogged about the Thai government’s efforts to lift the restrictions that kept superyacht charter vessels away from Thailand. Now that the door has been opened for foreign-flagged yachts. In addition, American charterers and tourists are welcome. Here are some cultural taboos that could save you from being branded an “Ugly American.”
BUDDHIST RULES
Keep in mind almost 95% of the Thai population is Buddhist. As in much of southeast Asia, there are cultural taboos that non-Buddhists would not know, some of which are considered religiously offensive.
DO NOT DO THIS
Three things NOT to do on your yacht charter Thailand:
Avoid touching or passing any object over the top of anyone’s head, as a person’s head is viewed as the most sacred body part. Related to this – Do not touch anyone’s head.
Don’t point your foot at any person, and don’t use your foot to move anything, as the foot is viewed as the lowliest body part. Remember to never put your feet up on a table or any furniture. [I thought my mother-in-law was Italian, but now I’m thinking she was Thai, as she always scolded her son for putting his feet on the coffee table while watching TV!!!]
Try never to point, especially with your index finger, as it is considered extremely rude. [Think of President Bill Clinton – he always used his thumb to point, never his index finger. Funny, he doesn’t strike me as a Buddhist!]
ALWAYS DO THIS!
Always use your right hand to pass or receive an object. [Sorry left-handed charterers.]
In conclusion, one of the great joys of a yachting vacation is The Superyacht Experience™. It is the chance to embrace diversity, participate in unique cultural events, and rejuvenate mind, body, and spirit. By avoiding these taboos, think how much more enjoyable your Phuket yacht charter vacation will be. You won’t offend the wonderful people of Thailand, and your mother won’t scold you for putting your feet up on the yacht’s furniture!
