When it comes to naming a superyacht, the sources of inspiration seem limitless.
Many owners select the name of their spouse or their children. Others opt for themes, such as romance and affection. Of course, movie-themed names remain popular as well (e.g. John and Jeanette Staluppi and their James Bond yacht selection including DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER, CASINO ROYALE, and Benetti yacht SPECTRE, Project FB269.
The multi-yacht owner of 83-meter Amels motor yacht HERE COMES THE SUN, has an inspiration. In specific, it is music. It is somewhat obvious to most Baby Boomers. Obviously, songs by The Beatles.
The owner had two other yachts. First, the 47-meter Heesen yacht LET IT BE. Second, the 65-meter Amels Limited Editions 212 yacht IMAGINE (now INFINITE SHADES).
In a way, the name seems entirely appropriate. This yacht is a behemoth. Additionally, she seems to be the size of the sun. In specific, in silhouette against the evening skyline. She is the new flagship of the fabled Dutch yard. In addition, the first Amels Limited Editions 272. The yacht comes in at 2827 gross tons, more than the 95-meter Lurssen yacht KISMET (2700GT).

VAT taxes on yacht charters
Every summer, hundreds of well-heeled travelers migrate to the Western Mediterranean. They travel there to enjoy a private yacht luxury charter vacation. Coastal towns like Nice and St Tropez in France participate. San Remo and Portofino in Italy also host dozens of superyachts. The boats bring charterers from around the world. It is an affluent vacation. Even the wealthy cringe. Specifically when their exclusive yacht rental holiday receives VAT charges often in excess of 12%. They know the value of their hard-earned dollars. We make sure that their memorable and valuable vacation funds are spent wisely.
Imagine spending €725,000/wk to rent a yacht. For example, Admiral superyacht PLANET NINE as your holiday hire. Just envision incurring an additional €87,000 in VAT? Ouch!!!
Over the years, we composed many blogs about the challenges of VAT taxes. Yacht rental guests need to stay aware of the laws. In some years, yacht charters were VAT exempt. In others, the exemption was rescinded. The rates go up, down, and often vary among various European Union countries, like France, Spain, and Italy.
Fortunately, with a little advance planning, it might be possible to reduce your charter’s VAT liability by up to 50%. Jana Sheeder, our company’s President explains:
“If you rent a luxury yacht for a vacation in the South of France, say, Nice, Antibes, Cannes, and neighboring Monte Carlo (in the principality of Monaco), you will incur a VAT charge of 12%. However, if leave European Union waters during your charter, the VAT is reduced by 50%. The easiest way to accomplish this is to schedule an overnight run to the island of Sardinia, off the French coast. Spend a day of so in the area, then cruise back to the South of France. Not only is this a worthwhile itinerary, you’ll also enjoy a tremendous discount in your VAT expenses.”
To accomplish this, and to be in full, legal compliance with the European Union statutes, Jana adds a clause. In specific, to the client’s yacht charter agreement that reads, in part,
“It is agreed between the parties that the yacht will cruise in international waters for part of the itinerary, which has not been determined, so VAT will only be charged on the 50% of the charter fee. In the event the yacht does not cruise in international waters and VAT becomes due on the total amount of the charter fee, the charterer hereby agrees to pay the outstanding VAT on the total amount of the charter fee in cleared funds and without delay to the stakeholder. VAT is calculated with a lump sum reduction of the time spent in EU waters in application of BOI-TVA-CHAMP-20-50-20-20120912 Article 90.”
In addition to reducing VAT expenses in France, it’s also possible to find similar savings in other Western Mediterranean destinations. Similar money-saving strategies apply for charter yacht luxury vacations in Italy as well.
For example, if a charterer wants to start and end a 10 night trip in Naples, Jana will encourage the client to end the charter in Sardinia, to the west, or Sicily to the south, in order to cruise through international waters, and qualify for a reduced VAT fee.
In conclusion, with just a little advance planning, it’s possible to save thousands of dollars on your next luxury rental yacht vacation!

We’ve all seen the images. They include a silhouette of a sailing yacht. Also nearby is a secluded beach. The sun is setting in the background of all photos. Massive superyachts are docked side-by-side in a marina along the Côte d’Azur. Imagine you and your family inserted in the yachting images. Enjoy la belle vie.
Is it realistic to think you can afford a holiday at sea on a private yacht?
To answer that question, let’s start with understanding exactly what a yacht charter is all about.
You’ve stayed at a resort. You have enjoyed the premise of a yachting vacation on a crewed yacht. From accommodations, to meals, activities and amenities, you have it all. Everything you and your family need are available in one location. The biggest difference is next. Your location “moves” when you charter a yacht!
Take, for example, a Virgin Islands yacht charter vessel. Other travelers stay ashore and see the same view from their hotel window. Each day you can wake up and experience a new location. Your yacht cruises from island to island. Forget a virtual online slideshow. This is the real deal!
While onboard, you’ll be pampered by a crew of trained professionals – from a captain to navigate, to a host/hostess to serve you, and a chef to prepare your meals. The actual number of crew depends on the size of the yacht you charter and the level of service you request.
Just like the resort, the yacht offers accommodations, areas to relax and socialize, and a wide variety of recreational toys to enjoy – like snorkel gear, kayaks, and paddleboards. The larger yachts offer a wider variety of toys and amenities, including wave runners, cinema rooms, exercise equipment – even ondeck Jacuzzi spas.
There is one more distinguishing difference when compared to a resort. It is completely private. Only you, your family/friends, and professional crew are onboard.
Again, the comparison to seaside resorts best illustrates the locations available for enjoying a yachting holiday – if it’s on the ocean, chances are there are yachts in the area available for hire!
Here’s a partial list of the most popular destinations for chartering a crewed yacht:
If you guessed that we would once again go back and look at a resort for the answer – you’re right!
The price options for enjoying a crewed yacht directly compare to the prices of staying at a resort. Basic resorts in popular destinations can be very affordable for a family vacation, and so too can be the cost of a private yacht charter. Conversely, ultra exclusive resorts in posh settings charge premium rates – as do the most luxurious private yachts.
To put this into realistic perspective, here’s a sample of yachts and their prices:

Whoo-hoo! The yacht’s representative contacted us to announce newly reduced rates. These are for the popular 191-foot motor yacht CARPE DIEM. The rates are for the remainder of the spring in the Bahamas. Her weekly rate reduction is from $395,000 per week to now $375,000 per week.

The 191′ (58.23 meter) Trinity yacht CARPE DIEM is well known. People recognize her in the Bahamas. Additionally, Captain Ryan Butterwick has a crew of 11. The past three seasons enjoy affluent travelers onboard. Most yachts of this size are further south in the Caribbean during the winter. For instance, St. Martin and St Barts. Captain Butterwick and the yacht’s owner saw an opportunity. In specific, to be one of the very few large private yacht charter vessels. Further, to choose the Bahamas as their home port for the winter and spring.
The representative describes the yacht as,
“…an objet d’art all her own. Her signature interior by Carol Williamson and Associates simultaneously creates a sense of both drama and balance. There is a marvelous display of juxtaposition of design elements. Whereas, joining opposing materials of Madagascar ebony wood with white onyx stone. Furthermore, varying textures of velvet, satin, and embossed Paltrona Frau leather. Showcased throughout the yacht are vintage fashion photographs, art deco antiques, and lavish furnishings.”
She accommodates 12 guests. This acclaimed charter yacht was a finalist for the 2012 World Superyacht Awards for Best Tri-Deck Semi-Displacement Yacht. In addition, she finalized for the 2012 Showboats Design Awards for Best Interior Design.
The yacht has multiple toys and tenders. For instance, a 32 foot (9.75-meter) Boston Whaler with 2 x 275 hp engines (Bahamas/Caribbean only). Also, a 23 foot (7-meter) Novurania Chase tender with 220 horsepower diesel engine and a 19-foot (5.79-meter) Zodiac Proluxe tender with 170 hp jet drive engine. Additionally, 4 Waverunners, 2 SeaBobs, a Jet Surfski, and a Flyboard. Further, waterskis, a wakeboard, and snorkel gear. Lastly, 6 sets of SCUBA gear, a SCUBA compressor, and a custom freestyle pool with jellyfish net.

When Champagne gets transported into another country, it’s normal that the pronunciation is adapted to suit the language. However, if you’re curious how to pronounce Champagne names comme il faut (translated = properly), you’re in the right place.
Even if you’re quite confident with French, the names can sometimes be tricky as many originate from other countries such as Germany.
Tip: “on” and “om” sounds are usually nasal sounds in French, such as in Dom Pérignon.
The one that probably causes the most trip-ups is Moët et Chandon, which is pronounced moh-et eh chan-dawn – and not the commonly-said moh-way… oops.
Finally, you now confidently order a fancy bottle of Champagne on your next holiday to France. >>
In conclusion, remember. The city of Cannes, France is simply pronounced “can” (not “con”). The Cannes Film Festival is pronounced CAN (like “an aluminum can,” not cAHn.)
