4 Reasons to Charter a Sailing Yacht

SAILBOAT OR MOTORYACHT

Do you prefer a sailboat or a motoryacht?

YACHT CHARTER BROKER ASKS

That is typically the first question a charter broker asks a prospective new customer when approached with an inquiry for a mega yacht charter vacation.
The answer is often a request for a motor yacht.   Yachting aficionados routinely inquire by motoryacht brand.  They ask specifically, for example, for a Benetti or Trinity yacht charter vessel.

The pendulum, however, seems to be swinging as more clients express interest in luxury sailing charter holidays.

We are witnessing a shift in our sense of priorities when it comes to the world around us,” says Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters, an international yacht rental agency.  “The focus on sustainable lifestyles goes beyond how we live at home.  Many travelers feel compelled to seek out an eco-friendly vacation, and sailboats are the perfect alternative to fossil-fuel powered motoryachts.

But what about luxury and comfort? For years, sailboats were considered small and cramped, with far fewer amenities than their power-driven counterparts.  “That’s all in the past,” says Sheeder.

Advances in technology have come a long way.  Naval architects have found ways to add upscale amenities to sailboats without compromising the yacht’s performance capabilities.

KOKOMO SAILING YACHT

Sail yacht KOKOMO is indicative of this direction.  The 58 meter sailboat reflects new heights of excellence in terms of design, technology, engineering, performance, and quality.

FOUR REASONS TO CHOOSE A SAILBOAT

With so much to offer, here are 4 great reasons to rent a sailing yacht:

1. Sailboats offer you the chance to experience and enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

2. Sailing yachts are more environmentally-responsible (“green“) than motor yachts.

3. Sailboats offer greater fuel economy and less fuel consumption than motor yachts.

4. Sailboats can offer a more tranquil, relaxing experience than a cruise on a motor yacht.

FIFTH REASON – FEEDBACK?

What is the 5th great reason to choose a sailing yacht charter vacation?  Click HERE to tell us why you think sailboats are the best way to experience a holiday on the sea.

All-Inclusive Rate Sets Megayacht Apart in Virgin Islands Yacht Charter Market

Posted on

Aerial photo of LADY DIA underway

Small to mid-sized luxury sailing charter yachts often offer all-inclusive charter packages. Specifically in the Virgin Islands.  Their larger megayacht counterparts are hesitant to do the same.  Superyachts opt for a la carte pricing.  They simply charge customers for each and every expense incurred. For instance food, alcohol, dockage, etc.

This summer, Captain Bernard Calot and his crew of 5 buck that trend.  They offer all-inclusive mega yacht charter vacations in the Virgin Islands onboard the 121′  motor yacht OLGA!

From May 15 through September 1, 2011, an all-inclusive rate of $69,900 per week will be offered.  In addition, a price of $55,000 per week for shorter 5 day odysseys.

Rates are valid for up to 8 persons. They include fuel, food, soft drinks, ship’s bar, and selective dockage.  Specialty items such as vintage wines and premium spirits are available.  Subsequently, at extra cost.

This special rate even includes spa treatments.  In addition, manicures. More importantly, from the yacht’s onboard certified massage therapist!  (What a perfect wedding anniversary vacation!)

Photograph of massage therapist and client (who is on massage bed) on the back of a superyacht. There is another motoryacht anchored behind them, in the distance.

Launched in 2003, Crescent motor yacht OLGA is an incredibly clean and well-maintained yacht.  She is a Jack Sarin design.  The yacht features a beautiful hard wood interior. In specific, Sapele and Pomele Mahogany.  The woods are complimented by tasteful, upscale furnishings.

The yacht’s full-time chef, Claire, is Cordon Bleu-trained.  Captain Bernard, Mate Clem, and deckhand Rafael can help you burn off the extra calories.  Specifically, through water activities including Scuba diving from the yacht for certified divers.  In addition to SCUBA, this well-equipped yacht is set up for fun on the water.  It carries an extensive inventory of toys. For instance, snorkel gear, kayaks, and a Hobie Wave catamaran.  In addition, waterskis, towable toys, fishing equipment, and a 22’ highspeed tender.

Charter Sail Yacht ON LIBERTY Draws Raves

Posted on

Yachting World magazine cover with photo of sailboat On Liberty on it.

It’s one thing to hear a charter broker tell you the sailboat you are considering for your St. Marten yacht charter is a great performance vessel with plenty of creature comforts.  More reassuring are the critical comments of a seasoned sailor who has been onboard while the yacht is underway.

There’s no substitute for a hands-on review of a yacht’s performance under sail.

Recently, sailing journalist Toby Hodge had the opportunity to join the luxury sailing  charter vessel Oyster 575 ON LIBERTY for a 220 nautical mile passage from Palma, Mallorca to Cartagena, Spain.  Hodge’s review appeared between the covers of the February 2011 issue of Yachting World magazine.

ON LIBERTY is a new entry into the charter market. Her pure hull lines will ensure this yacht is a fast passage maker.  Imagine planning a Virgin Islands yacht charter holiday on a blue water cruiser with exhilarating performance.

But hey – no need to take our word – read some of Toby Hodge’s comments:

“The 575 proved easy to handle…She’s another slippery yacht…with an easy motion that will be greatly appreciated at sea”

“Thanks to the twin wheels, the helmsman has unhindered views forward from both sides and I love what happens when you go through waves – nothing – she’s as well mannered as a royal butler.”

“Oyster has a winning recipe for internal layouts, thanks to the center cockpit which creates sumptuous aft cabins, large passageway or U-shaped galleys and spacious saloons set low down to maintain privacy, but enjoying plenty of daylight from the coach roof windows.”

RATE

ON LIBERTY is available this spring in the Caribbean at a weekly rate of $14,000 for 4 passengers, inclusive of food and non-alcoholic beverages.  This summer, the yacht will be based in the Western Mediterranean and offered for a rate of €11000 per week, plus all expenses.

Close To Home – Cruising the Bahamas for Easter

Posted on

Catamaran at anchor in front of an island in the Bahamas. Gorgeous photo has turquoise water in ocean

FAMILY VACATION

The memories from a family yacht vacation last a lifetime.  But how long does it take to get to our favorite cruising destinations?

EASTER AND SPRING BREAK

Whether flying commercial or private, it can be tedius.  It can be a long, sometimes grueling endeavor to get to the Caribbean, for instance, if you are going for Easter or Spring break.

CLOSE TO HOME

Is there an alternative closer to home – a destination that offers warm waters, plenty of sunshine, and a chance to reconnect with family and friends, away from the crowded tourist traps?  The answer is, “Yes” and it’s less than an hour away from mainland USA – it’s the Bahamas.

In the time that it take for commuters in Miami to drive to their jobs in Fort Lauderdale, you can catch a flight from South Florida to this tropical paradise.

THE BAHAMAS

The 16 major islands that make up the Bahamas are an exquisite mix of breathtaking natural beauty.  Blinding white sand beaches curl around the edges of almost every island, and the shallow waters reflect a turquoise hue found in few places around the world.

VIRGIN ISLANDS

Unlike the crowded anchorages visited in the Caribbean’s Virgin Islands, you can cruise for days in the Bahamas, without seeing more than a handful of people.  Many of the islands are sparsely populated, while the only inhabitants on some islands are large iguanas and friendly wild pigs that will swim out to your boat to beg for treats!

GOOMBAY AND BAHAMIAN LIFESTYLE

If you do come across the human residents, you will encounter genial, native Bahamians, known for their laid-back attitude, along with the vibrant Goombay/Calypso island culture.  Life is a celebration to these warm people, and hardly a week goes by without a parade or festival, celebrating their English colonial heritage and deep religious traditions. The recreational opportunities are endless as the Bahamas are a true sportsman’s paradise.  Outdoor activities include championship golf and tennis on the larger islands,  while the smaller Keys feature long stretches of  beaches, alluring underwater caves for diving, and coves where you can freely swim among dolphins and scores of fish.

A tropical paradise, close to home – what more could you ask for this Spring?

AVAILABLE YACHTS

During April and May, 1-800 Yacht Charters has over a dozen yachts in position for Bahama yacht charters, both large like 157′  yacht SCOTT FREE suitable for 12 guests, to smaller vessels like the 85′ yacht ANDIAMO with room for 4 to 6 passengers.

Best of all, there are plenty of EASTER specials available for last-minute getaways.

HOT Wheels Monster Tender

Posted on

Reel Wheels tender photograph. Picture is of a large solid white yacht and a fishing boat racing along next to it

Good times in the Bahamas just got even better, with the addition of the world’s largest tender to a luxury mega yacht charter vessel.

Motor yacht WHEELS, a 50 meter behemoth in her own right, has just added a 24-meter (80′) sportfish tender to her already impressive inventory of watertoys.

Far too large to be carried or towed, the tender, named REEL WHEELS, will follow closely along during charters, ever available for the use of the charter guests.

Amazingly, the yacht’s current tender, a large, Yellow Fin 36 is still in tow.  With two high performance sportfish tenders, there’s no excuse for any guests to be left behind when its time to hit the water for fishing, diving, and snorkeling excursions.

The envy of any deep-sea angler, REEL WHEELS is a 2007 Merritt 80 Sportfish yacht, fully-rigged with state-of-the-art fishfinder electronics and fishing gear.

Yacht named Reel Wheels underway

The “REEL” advantage of adding this sportfish yacht to the charter package is the capacity to bring more charter guests.  REEL WHEELS has a master cabin with room for two guests.  This means the total charter party for a vacation onboard WHEELS is 14 passengers.  This is great news considering most megayachts can accommodate no more than 12 guests.

The addition of this 80′ tender rounds out a watersports inventory that includes:

  • 36′ Yellow Fin Tender with 3 x 275hp engines
  • 20′ Nautica RIB tender
  • 17′ Wide Body Rescue Boat with 115hp engine
  • Two 3-seat Yamaha waverunners
  • Twelve sets of scuba gear
  • Brownie’s Third Lung
  • Underwater scooters
  • Elliptical machine
  • Snorkel gear
  • Assorted towable toys
  • Fishing gear
  • Board games
  • Crestron Central Movie/Music System
  • Kaleidescape Music/Movie Library
  • iPod docking stations
  • XBox

Just reading the list of onboard toys is exhausting!

There is NO extra charge, to bring REEL WHEELS along, in tandem with Trinity motor yacht WHEELS 164.  The charter price remains as before:  $200,000 per week plus expenses.
